Kennedy and the CIA

So I could dwell on Representative Kennedy totaling his car today. It is an interesting story. To date neither I nor anyone else I’ve heard has any idea why he wasn’t given a sobriety test. What, are representatives above the law?

Kennedy’s excuse is that he mixed his Ambien with another medication, and he doesn’t remember what happened. Ambien is a powerful prescription medicine that induces drowsiness and his explanation is plausible, but there is no excuse for the police not administering a sobriety test. He could have killed someone out there, and any other driver who would have totaled their car in the dead of night on a mostly empty road and then appeared incoherent to the police officers would certainly have been given a sobriety test.

Kennedy has battled bipolar disorder and substance abuse before. I’m honestly surprised that a man in his circumstances could get elected to anything, but at this point in history I think we all know that a good family name and some fundraising contacts go a long way. The Kennedy family in Massachusetts seemingly inherits their political positions.

But there are more important stories to discuss. Porter Goss has just resigned as the director of the CIA. It came as a “shock” to people he worked with: apparently he didn’t put in his two weeks. The White House is mum as far as the reasons for his resignation.

I predict Tony Snow is going to get quite a workout on this one. This secretive White House won’t even tell the American people why he so suddenly left. It smells funny, doesn’t it?

There is that investigation into the executive director of the CIA. Could this have something to do with it? We are left to speculate.

There is more to speculate on, however. Mary McCarthy, the recently fired CIA officer accused of leaking information to the press, worked in the Inspector General’s office, the same office that is conducting the investigation into the executive director of the CIA. McCarthy has denied leaking any information to the press.

Connection? Again, we are left to speculate. The CIA hasn’t fired anyone with regard to September 11th or the WMD debacles, but now they have fired someone who worked in the Inspector General’s office conducting an investigation into the highest reaches of the organization. The Inspector General’s office also “recommended the convening of CIA disciplinary boards” in the wake of September 11th but Porter Goss rejected the recommendation and refused to declassify its report.  It looks suspicious, to say the least.
