The Middle East Today

Per usual conventions, Israel’s reprisal against militants yesterday was buried in The Chicago Tribune. The attack was a small one. Aljazeera reports that “Earlier Friday, at least one Palestinian was killed after Israeli troops opened fire on stone-throwing youths in the Northern West Bank”

Reread that last sentence and think about it. Some teenage kids were pelting Israeli security forces with rocks and in return they received a hail of gunfire. Run out of tear gas and rubber bullets, Israel? Secondly, what are Israeli security forces doing in the West Bank?

Another interesting quote from the article: “Palestinian officials say US pressure has also thwarted a Hamas-backed plan for the Arab League to deposit donor funds directly into the accounts of workers.” So now America is pressuring other nations no to give aid?

Another article’s headline gives an example of how different news agencies view the same event.

AL Bawaba has a hilarious article written about American and Israeli foreign policy by Amr Ismail. Ismail contends, citing the article The Israel Lobby and American Foreign Policy, that Israel is using the United States as a giant pilot drone for its interests, a belief that Chomsky and I find a somewhat amusing example of putting the cart before the horse. Ismail cites Ladeen and Falwell’s apocalyptic comments on war in the Middle East in a hilarious mirror-image of Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s comments on war prospects in the Middle East.

Remi Kanazi, a Palestinian-American freelancer writing for Al Bawaba, wrote a fantastic summary of the US occupation of Iraq here
