A New Record

There was a time, not long ago, when I didn’t think that the president’s popularity would approach that of Dick Nixon when he fled the Oval Office: 27%.

I was wrong. The latest USA Today/Gallup Poll indicates that the president’s approval rating has reached a new all-time low: 31%.

Ouch. This president’s approval ratings simply have nowhere else to go. When, and I mean when, his approval ratings hit the twenties it won’t signify any significant further deterioration in his support. I suppose the only question left, at this point in history, is whether or not this president will set a new record with Gallup for the lowest poll result in history.

It’s pretty clear that this administration has engendered partisan feelings. In fact, Bush’s ratings among independents and democrats is stark. “Liberals” give the president a 7% approval rating, “Democrats” give the president a 4% approval rating, “Independents” give the president a 26% approval rating. As Gallup’s breakdown of the statistics shows, this president has officially set a new modern record for the least popular president among independents and members of the opposite party. Jimmy Carter was more popular, at his low point, among independents and members of the opposite party.

This president has also set a record for the greatest divide among the approval ratings between members of his own party and independents, not to mention members of the opposite party.

I have used the word before, and I will use it again: disaster. Even in a time of overall economic well-being this president has become politically radioactive due to nothing besides his own actions and policies.

In further news from the culture of corruption, Frist and Hastert inserted a provision into a bill in the dark of night that protects vaccine manufacturers from lawsuits even in the event of gross negligence. A new revelation reveals that, surprise, this provision was essentially written by lobbyists.
