Conservatives Attack the Media

The program the government has to monitor bank transactions, as revealed by the New York Times last week, is yet another example of how this administration disregards laws in its prosecution of the “War on Terror.”

Dianne Feinstein has recently said that she was never briefed about the program, which has gone on since September 11th, until a matter of weeks ago when it became apparent to the administration that the existence of the program was going to be disclosed by the New York Times.
This looks like yet another program in which the president broke the law by not informing members of congress.

Mediamatters has a good (and long) piece on the subject of the Bank Program and why its disclosure is hardly “treasonous” (and the hysterical and vicious reaction of the right is overblown. I especially like the fact that they cited Andrew McCarthy’s lie. McCarthy is an irritating and slippery right-wing demagogue.

A tip o’ the hat to the Wall Street Journal. As I have remarked before (and will remark again, and again, and again) the fetid stench of intellectual dishonesty in the media community always gets the strongest the closer one approaches the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ managed recently to excoriate the NYT for daring to reveal the existence of the banking program while publishing a major article on the same subject the same day. If you are really interested in reading the contorted logic of the WSJ as to why this isn’t utter hypocrisy, then, by all means, go ahead, hurt yourself all you want.

And a tip o’ the hat to John Gibson, who is the propagandist of the week who decided to dust off the “Liberals are traitors” tool and use it to smear half the country, asserting that “Once again, the lefties are seen cheering terrorist victories.”

Finally, Steve Young has a hilarious article at the Huffington Post.
